Upon first gander, I didn’t think I would like this product. Oh, how very wrong I was. Josh Rosebrook is a luxury skincare and hair care line full of interesting and high-performing products. His brand is described as artisanal; his manifesto outlines a mission to return to a pre-Industrial Revolution economy of goods produced at a small scale by highly skilled manufacturers. This is a pretty cool concept and definitely one that has gained popularity in the last decade. People are seeking out local and quality goods more and more. In addition, his products are made of “organic, certified organic or wild crafted plants and herbs,” are never tested on animals, and do not include “sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, artificial colors, silicones, petrochemicals or GMOs.” Pretty impressive stuff!

The online boutique Choosy Chick generously sent me some products to review and this was amongst the bunch.

The Choosy Chick founder Margot created her online boutique by adhering to three standards: safety, efficacy, and a mission of sustainability. All of the brands for sale are healthy for your skin, effective, and environmentally friendly. These online stores are such a great resource; the Choosy Chick especially makes you feel secure that anything purchased from the store will meet clean and green beauty standards. Also, the customer service is phenomenal. Margot has a cheerful social media presence and made all of our correspondence a pleasure. I cannot recommend this online shop more! Stay tuned for a discount code at the end of this post :).

The Josh Rosebrook Cacao Antioxidant Mask is marketed as a “powerful skin brightening and rejuvenating product that detoxifies, tones, firms and exfoliates the skin. Users experience a clearer, firmer and brighter complexion after the first treatment.” All good things, right? However, I originally had my heart set on the Active Enzyme Exfoliator, which seemed more geared towards my skin type while the Cacao Antioxidant Mask seemed targeted to dry or mature skin. I realized how mistaken I was after my first use.

It is a thick, paste-like texture that I found difficult to spread on dry skin. To ease application, I combined the mask with a toner in a tiny bowl and mixed them together with a brush. This really helped! It’s a super dark chocolate colour with an almost hint of deep violet, and the scent reminds of acai berry mixed with cacao powder. It’s very reminiscent of a “superfood smoothie” if you’ve ever used both of those ingredients in a smoothie before. Directions instruct to leave the mask on for up to 45 minutes, and I took full advantage of every minute. I was really surprised with the end result! First off, this mask is gentle. It doesn’t dry into a tight crust, but remains quite velvety on the skin. Despite the dark colour, it is simple to remove with a washcloth and some warm water. The best part? It left my skin looking luminous, plump, and smooth. I ran my fingers over my cheeks several times marveling at how soft my skin felt. It also seems to reduce the look of pores and even out skin tone. The directions warn of a slight reddening of the skin for 30-45 minutes after treatment, but I did not experience this at all. This is the most powerful yet gentle mask that I have ever used. I knew this brand was awesome, but I wasn’t expecting such great results from this particular product!

This wonderful experience with Josh Rosebrook has left me excited to try more of the brand! I really want to test out his LIFT Hair Texturize and Volume spray, his Oculus Formula eye serum, the Hydrating Accelerator, and of course the Active Enzyme Exfoliator. I need more of you in my life, Josh!
