Desert Essences Coconut Shampoo – This has been a staple for me and my husband for YEARS. I’ve tried shampoos from Rahua, Innersense, John Masters Organics, Shea Moisture, you name it, but I always come back to this tried and true staple, even compared to other to the other Desert Essences shampoos. It’s the only natural (or otherwise) shampoo that leaves my thick, coarse hair feeling moisturized and cleansed without making it feel stripped or left greasy. Bonus is that it smells like a tropical vacation.

Giovanni 50/50 Balance Hydrating-Calming Conditioner – I went through an intense research moment this year all about hair, specifically if my hair has low or high porosity and what ingredients to avoid or incorporate into my haircare routine. Though I love how thick my hair is, it’s also served as an antagonistic force in my beauty routine. It’s not naturally curly, nicely wavy, or straight. If I allow it to air dry, it looks frizzy and messy. I tried to force it to embrace its natural body with the curly girl method this summer, but it just didn’t work for me, and I gave it a months-long go. Through that process, I learned that my hair has a low porosity meaning that it doesn’t absorb things well at all and products, water, etc. don’t sink into my hair but sit on top, which made A LOT of sense looking back on things. If you’re curious, the test involves taking a strand of hair and putting it into a cup of water for 10-15 minutes (don’t quote me on the timing). If your hair sinks immediately, it’s got a high porosity (also not great), if it floats the whole time, it’s got a low porosity because it didn’t suck in the water and sink. Even in the shower, I noted after the test, it takes a while for the water to fully penetrate my locks and even when my hair is as soaking as it gets and coated in conditioner, there will still be a bit of frizz! How nuts/annoying is that?!?

The point of that long story is that I needed to find a conditioner that was low in protein because the protein ends up weighting my type of hair down and not sinking in at all. This is that conditioner! It truly does help detangle my hair and leave it as smooth as it will get without weighing it down or leaving it feeling gunky. I’ve repurchased it twice so far and am due for another bottle.

Frederic Fekkai Brilliant Glossing Styling Cream – Natural styling products, moisturizers, and anti-frizz products are filled with oils and, as explained above, those are unfortunately a no-go with my type of hair. I’ve had a really difficult time finding anything remotely natural that can tame this mane, even conventional products can leave it a greasy mess. I picked this product up in the summer based on reviews, my hair type, and yes its inclusion of silicones, and I really like how it performs. I just add a nickel’s worth to my wet hair post-shower, and it does help smooth and tame some of my frizz and adds some definition through this added smoothness without leaving any build-up on my hair. I’d love to find a natural alternative for it, but I haven’t been able to find one. I will happily take your recommendations!

Osmia Organics Black Clay Soap – I searched high and low for a bar soap that would cleanse and not clog my pores like my tested and true but chemical-laden Dove Sensitive Bar Soap, and I finally found it. This bar soap is the multi-purpose best. I can use it on my face and body, and my sensitive, acne-prone skin absolutely loves it. I cannot recommend it more, and I’m so glad that I found it!

Deep Steep Body Lotion – I have so many different oils and lotions that I love slathering on, so it was hard to narrow down a favorite in this category. Though not the most glamorous, I just love the body lotion from Deep Steep! There are a ton of fresh, fruity scents, the formula is thick and luxurious but sinks it quickly, and it’s just so darn affordable! I’ve got multiple tubes of it and have them placed all around the house, especially now in the winter, to be able to smooth into my hands/skin whenever I need some extra moisture! Grapefruit Bergamot and Spearmint Honeydew are my favorite scents.

If I had to pick my favorite luxe product, it would have to be the Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil. It smells absolutely divine, and it leaves the skin plump and perfect.

Perrigo 10 % Benzoyl Peroxide Acne Treatment Gel – Sometimes, I’m lucky enough to get a breakout not on my face 🙃. Again, I’ve tried a slew of natural alternatives to keep all of my skin smooth and clear. I’ve done clays, tea tree oil, sprays, exfoliation, but none of them work as well as this. I apply it after an evening body shower about 3-5 times a week, and it keeps my skin looking nice.

Tsi-La Fiori D’Arancia – This perfume is juicy, citrus perfection that is so fresh. I absolutely love it. It isn’t cloying and doesn’t smell fake or overly sweet/feminine despite its being a fruity sent. I’m super partial to citrus, and I’m so happy to have found the perfect, natural citrus scent!

Philosophy Amazing Grace – Not natural, but I absolutely adore this smell. More than anything else, I want to smell fresh and clean, and this scent by Philosophy is just that. I douse it all over my clothes and hair for the perfect, clean and mellow fragrance.

Now that 2017’s beauty is officially wrapped, I’m excited to explore new makeup and masks this year! Any that you’d recommend or particularly like to see?
